Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake In Venezuela Rattles Nerves
Sunday, February 14, 2010

On 15 January2010, an earthquake struck at about 1.30pm (1800GMT),near the Caribbean
coastal town of Carupano,
Venezuela.According to the U.S. Geological Survey,it was about 25 miles southwest of Carupano, fairly close to the surface, at about
7.3 miles below ground.
The Haiti earthquake that
happened recently was thought to be the main cause of this earthquake. It was caused by *submarine thrust faults that run through the Caribbean region between the North American and Caribbean plates. The 5.6 magnitude earthquake caused panic and shook the nearby city of Puerto La Cruz.Although the earthquake can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions and slight damage to well-designed buildings, there were no reports of injuries, deaths, or major damage. Enrique Maestre the governor of Sucre state in Eastern Venezuela said that they have started restoring the electricity that was down in some areas in some of the areas when the earthquake occurred. As the epicentre of this earthquake is positioned a few hundred kilometres of key oil operations in the Orinoco Belt, the venezuela government would also like to take this oppotunity to upgrade and refine the facilities of Venezuela.

To conclude, although the 5.6 earthquake did not cause much damage,I think that Venezuela should be prepared at all times for emergency alerts. It is also important to upgrade their facilities to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

*When the rocks move toward each other, the earthquake is called a thrust fault earthquake. These earthquakes are often the largest and most destructive. Also, they can involve vertical motion of the Earth’s surface, as one plate or block rides up and over the other one. If this occurs underwater, this is call submarine thrust fault
